Anti-corruption hotline report not so hot

Eight years after it was set up, the government’s national anti-corruption hotline has managed to claw back only R110 million in public servants’ ill-gotten gains.

Fewer than 1 500 officials have had action taken against them.

State to fight social grant fraud, corruption

The government has stepped up efforts to stamp out fraud and corruption within its social security system, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said on Monday.

Briefing journalists in Pretoria, she said the state provided social grants - through the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) - to over 15 million beneficiaries, with a total budget of R105 billion.

MK vets probed for corruption

Top Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) officials turned investment holdings into their own personal piggy bank, according to a report on Friday.

A forensic report alleged that the funds were used to pay for jewellery, spa treatments and school drama lessons, with large sums withdrawn before Christmas, the Mail&Guardian reported.

Corruption ‘on the rise’

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has been alarmed by the apparent escalation of financial irregularities in government with money lost through fraud and corruption increasing from R356m to R938m.

The director-general in the PSC, Richard Levin, said yesterday the PSC needed to increase its investigative capacity to deal with cases of corruption.

Agency mum on corruption

JOHANNESBURG -This after the DA’s spokesman on defence and military veterans, David Maynier, said yesterday he would ask Radebe to probe whether the appointment of Thulani Dhlomo as head of special operations at the State Security Agency (SSA) had been proper.

“It is hard to imagine that Dhlomo would have received a security clearance, given the corruption investigation, and hard to imagine he would have been appointed without a security clearance,” Maynier said. Dube said they “have no comment” on Maynier’s statement.
