Former CEO of AngloGold Ashanti and former president of the South African Chamber of Mines

Robert (Bobby) Michael Godsell, former CEO of AngloGold Ashanti and former president of the South African Chamber of Mines as well as the World Gold Council, has not slowed down since his “retirement”.
A member of the National Planning Commission, he is also chairperson of Business Leadership South Africa, an organisation representing the 70 largest South African public and private companies. He is co-chairperson, with Cosatu’s Zwelinzima Vavi, of the Millennium Labour Council, a body that provides for social dialogue between South African business and labour leaders. And he is the non-executive chairperson of Optimum Coal Holdings, a black economic empowerment coal company.
Born in Boksburg, he grew up in Durban. He obtained a BA degree in sociology and philosophy from the University of Natal and an MA in liberal ethics from the University of Cape Town. He also spent a year pursuing postgraduate studies in sociology and philosophy at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He is currently chairman of the board of directors of St Augustine College, a private Catholic University.
He is best known for his work in the mining sector, but also served a year and a half as chairperson of Eskom Holdings, resigning in November 2009.
Godsell is co-author, with James Motlatsi – previous president of the National Union of Mineworkers – of Do it! Every South African’s guide to making a difference, published by Jacana in November 2008.
