SUMMARY:Online training - Investigating the health sector: red flags in public procurement and public spending
DESCRIPTION:Corruption Watch in collaboration with the Open Contracting Partnership (OCP) is inviting journalists to participate in our training on open contracting as a tool for transparency and accountability in governance. Given the wide-spread corruption in Covid-related procurement that has been identified by the media\, this is an appropriate time to discuss greater transparency and accountability in the context of government procurement. \n\n\n\n\nThe workshop is aimed at introducing the concept of open contracting and building an understanding of the use of procurement data for anti-corruption\, red flag monitoring\, and investigative journalism. We also aim to provide guidance on how to use data tools and resources for the analysis of procurement data. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be walked through an introduction to open contracting\, its principles\, key concepts\, and implementation. We will also cover the contracting process\, context\, and history of open contracting and the Open Contracting Data Standard\, the problems it was developed to address\, use cases\, and finding the data. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we will provide training on how to use our red flags methodology to show how you can reference procurement data against a set of over 150 suspicious behaviour indicators\, or “red flags” and how this fits into your investigative storytelling. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us as we discuss this important issue\, where the media can continue to play its vital role in ensuring accountability for government corruption. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Education in a time of Covid-19.
DESCRIPTION:Responding to worldwide debates on education\, the University of Nottingham (UoN) Human Rights Law Centre and the Centre for International Education Research will host a webinar on education in a time of Covid-19. \n\n\n\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant global impact on education. Schools and other educational institutions have been closed and online education is being both welcomed as a key element of supporting the education of some and criticised for failing to meet the needs of others. International debates about if\, how\, and when schools should reopen are ongoing and heated. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will address questions such as how education systems should be reconceptualised to render them more resilient and how the rights of learners\, education workers\, parents and the broader community can best be secured. \n\n\n\nProfessor Aoife Nolan\, co-director of the UoN Human Rights Law Centre\, will chair the event. Speakers will include Dr Koumbou Boly Barry\, United Nations Special Rapporteur\, Professor Allyson Pollock\, director of the Newcastle University Centre for Excellence in Regulatory Science\, and Professor Simon McGrath\, chair of UNESCO’s International Education and Development programme. \n\n\n\nYou can register for the webinar here. \n\n\n\nWith 11.3 million confirmed cases worldwide\, the World Health Organisation says the current Covid-19 outbreak has provoked social stigma and discriminatory behaviours against people of certain ethnic backgrounds as well as anyone perceived to have been in contact with the virus.

SUMMARY:CW to engage mining-affected communities in Newcastle\, KZN
DESCRIPTION:Dear Editors\, News Editors and Journalists\, \n\n\n\nCorruption Watch will be conducting a series of engagements with mining-affected communities in Dannhauser\, Newcastle\, from 3 to 5 March 2020. These meetings will look into the challenges faced by these communities relating to the administration of mining royalties. \n\n\n\nThrough this consultative process\, the organisation will be able to identify the main challenges facing the communities in seeking accountability and transparency over the administration of community royalties.  The discussions with communities will also help to address the problems around the access to key information such as resolutions\, financial documents and the mining application process. \n\n\n\nThese engagements stem from frustrated mining communities reaching out to Corruption Watch to empower them with necessary information to collectively hold tribal and government leaders accountable. Community members from Mtendeka\, Umzinyathi\, Klipspruit and Uitkomst will attend these meetings. \n\n\n\nThe engagements will be held as follows: \n\n\n\nVenue: 3 March – Mtendeka Community Sports Ground \n\n\n\n4 March – Umzinyathi Community Sports Ground \n\n\n\n5 March – Uitkomst Community Sports Ground \n\n\n\nTime: 10h00 to 13h00 \n\n\n\nFor RSVP and media queries\, contact: \n\n\n\nPhemelo Khaas:                              Phemelok@corruptionwatch.org.za                        083 763 3472

SUMMARY:Report Launch: Corruption in South Africa's Water Sector
DESCRIPTION:South Africa faces significant water challenges. Water is often not available where and when it is needed\, or of the quality needed. Reasons include unpredictable rainfall\, limited infrastructure\, the misuse of financial resources\, and poor management. \n\n\n\nBut these problems are aggravated by corruption\, which extends from taps in rural villages to the systems that supply South Africa’s economic heartland. \n\n\n\nCorruption in the water sector must be tackled: water is too important to allow its management to be undermined. At the same time\, the wider political and economic challenges that drive much of this corruption must also be addressed. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we launch our research report\, MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN: corruption in South Africa’s water sector\, commissioned by Corruption Watch and WIN and authored by Mike Muller\, former director-general of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
