SUMMARY:Education in a time of Covid-19.
DESCRIPTION:Responding to worldwide debates on education\, the University of Nottingham (UoN) Human Rights Law Centre and the Centre for International Education Research will host a webinar on education in a time of Covid-19. \n\n\n\nThe Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant global impact on education. Schools and other educational institutions have been closed and online education is being both welcomed as a key element of supporting the education of some and criticised for failing to meet the needs of others. International debates about if\, how\, and when schools should reopen are ongoing and heated. \n\n\n\nSpeakers will address questions such as how education systems should be reconceptualised to render them more resilient and how the rights of learners\, education workers\, parents and the broader community can best be secured. \n\n\n\nProfessor Aoife Nolan\, co-director of the UoN Human Rights Law Centre\, will chair the event. Speakers will include Dr Koumbou Boly Barry\, United Nations Special Rapporteur\, Professor Allyson Pollock\, director of the Newcastle University Centre for Excellence in Regulatory Science\, and Professor Simon McGrath\, chair of UNESCO’s International Education and Development programme. \n\n\n\nYou can register for the webinar here. \n\n\n\nWith 11.3 million confirmed cases worldwide\, the World Health Organisation says the current Covid-19 outbreak has provoked social stigma and discriminatory behaviours against people of certain ethnic backgrounds as well as anyone perceived to have been in contact with the virus.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Editors\, News Editors and Journalists\, \n\n\n\nCorruption Watch will be conducting a series of engagements with mining-affected communities in Dannhauser\, Newcastle\, from 3 to 5 March 2020. These meetings will look into the challenges faced by these communities relating to the administration of mining royalties. \n\n\n\nThrough this consultative process\, the organisation will be able to identify the main challenges facing the communities in seeking accountability and transparency over the administration of community royalties.  The discussions with communities will also help to address the problems around the access to key information such as resolutions\, financial documents and the mining application process. \n\n\n\nThese engagements stem from frustrated mining communities reaching out to Corruption Watch to empower them with necessary information to collectively hold tribal and government leaders accountable. SUMMARY:Report Launch: Corruption in South Africa's Water Sector
DESCRIPTION:South Africa faces significant water challenges. Water is often not available where and when it is needed\, or of the quality needed. Reasons include unpredictable rainfall\, limited infrastructure\, the misuse of financial resources\, and poor management. \n\n\n\nBut these problems are aggravated by corruption\, which extends from taps in rural villages to the systems that supply South Africa’s economic heartland. \n\n\n\nCorruption in the water sector must be tackled: water is too important to allow its management to be undermined. At the same time\, the wider political and economic challenges that drive much of this corruption must also be addressed. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we launch our research report\, MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN: corruption in South Africa’s water sector\, commissioned by Corruption Watch and WIN and authored by Mike Muller\, former director-general of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.

To mark the occasion\, we are calling on civil society organisations CSOs\, the private sector\, governments\, the media and citizens around the world to stand #UnitedAgainstCorruption. The 2019 campaign\, developed jointly by UNODC and UNDP\, will continue to leverage the multi-year “United Against Corruption” theme. Check the International Anti-Corruption Day website where the 2019 campaign material such as logos\, posters\, and leaflets are available in multiple languages for maximum outreach. With these\, you can: \n\n\n\n1. Network and mobilise people to take action: Organise public meetings and rallies\, make speeches\, distribute the campaign materials\, set up petitions and run meetings\, workshops or events;2. Raise your voice and advocate: Write letters\, newspaper articles\, adverts and newsletters\, produce radio programmes\, and participate in televised interviews;3. Speak out on social media: Adopt the logo as your profile picture\, and make visible the campaign materials in order to raise awareness around the International Anti-Corruption Day by using the hashtags #UnitedAgainstCorruption and #YouthForJustice to stress the importance of empowering and mobilizing youth to fight for a corrupt-free world. \n\n\n\nNeed more information?UNDP and UNODC are at the forefront of these efforts. SUMMARY:Political Party Funding: the Role of Business\, Legal Reforms and the Slow Pace of Change
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion: \n\n\n\nUndue influence by wealthy elites and looters on politicians is a danger to our society\, as politicians are more accountable to those who can fill their pockets as opposed to the people who put them in power. Long before the VBS Bank Scandals\, the Gupta enterprise\, Bosasa slush funds and the CR17 campaign scandals\, politicians and the business sector have colluded for selfish interests\, at the expense of the public interest. Despite the corruption scandals that continue to rock the nation\, we are yet to see regulated disclosure of political party funding. \n\n\n\nPlease join us as we host Business Leadership South Africa’s (BLSA) CEO\, BUSI MAVUSO\, who will speak on business being complicit in corruption and the role business should play in the fight against corruption AND political analyst\, author and lecturer\, RALPH MATHEGKA\, who will speak on how party funding corruption is a systemic problem that extends beyond the “nine wasted years” under President Jacob Zuma.  \n\n\n\n  Discussion hosted by My Vote Counts (MVC) and Right 2 Know (R2K) \n\n\n\nRSVP: by 4 November 2019

SUMMARY:Perceptions of corruption and the 2019 elections (Pretoria)
DESCRIPTION:Democracy Governance and Service Delivery (DGSD) and Corruption Watch invite you to\nPerceptions of Corruption and the 2019 elections \nDate: Monday\, 3 June 2019Time: 11.30 am –3.30 pmVenues: Video conference in Pretoria\, Cape Town and KwaZulu-NatalLivestream by Vidyo \nSpeakers: David Lewis\, Khaya Sithole\, Ben Roberts\, Gary Pienaar\, Lizette Lancaster\, SAHRCChairs: Mia Swart & Deborah Mutemwa-Tumbo \nThe 2019 elections have been closely observed both locally and internationally and in all corners of society. Corruption and state capture were burning issues informing debates on the elections. \nThe Democracy\, Governance and Service Delivery Unit of the Human Sciences Research Council together with Corruption Watch will be hosting a seminar on perceptions of corruption and the 2019 general elections. The HSRC has been conducting research on the extent to which corruption impacts on elections in South Africa. Corruption Watch is a civil society organisation that is committed to fighting corruption in South Africa through various means\, including raising public awareness about corruption and receiving reports of corruption directly from the public. \nThe seminar will address questions such as: \n\nHow did the perceptions and the facts on corruption influence the electorate?\nHow did political parties respond to the outcry against corruption?\nWhat does the ANC election victory in the face of rampant corruption tell us about the South African public?\nHow will discontent with corruption inform future voting patterns\, if at all?\n\nFollowing the election results\, this is an appropriate time to reflect on corruption in South Africa\, how this affected voter behavior and the 2019 election results. It is also an opportune time to look to the future and consider how efforts to combat and raise public awareness about corruption can impact the next elections. \nKindly RSVP by 31 May 2019.\nPLEASE NOTE: This is one of three venues for the same event that will run simultaneously in Pretoria\, Cape Town and Durban. See the individual entries for Cape Town and Durban for more information. \n\nSouth Africa
