SUMMARY:International Anti-Corruption Day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,The International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December 2019 is fast approaching! To mark the occasion\, we are calling on civil society organisations CSOs\, the private sector\, governments\, the media and citizens around the world to stand #UnitedAgainstCorruption. The 2019 campaign\, developed jointly by UNODC and UNDP\, will continue to leverage the multi-year “United Against Corruption” theme. This year\, young people are in the spotlight: their role in strengthening accountability and developing innovative solutions to prevent and curb corruption is crucial. Empowering #YouthForJustice is key for ensuring sustainable solutions to combatting corruption. \n\n\n\nSo what can you do?Get inspired by checking out the Call to Action Matrix to find out the different ways that people can say “NO” to corruption. Check the International Anti-Corruption Day website where the 2019 campaign material such as logos\, posters\, and leaflets are available in multiple languages for maximum outreach. With these\, you can: \n\n\n\n1. Network and mobilise people to take action: Organise public meetings and rallies\, make speeches\, distribute the campaign materials\, set up petitions and run meetings\, workshops or events;2. Raise your voice and advocate: Write letters\, newspaper articles\, adverts and newsletters\, produce radio programmes\, and participate in televised interviews;3. Speak out on social media: Adopt the logo as your profile picture\, and make visible the campaign materials in order to raise awareness around the International Anti-Corruption Day by using the hashtags #UnitedAgainstCorruption and #YouthForJustice to stress the importance of empowering and mobilizing youth to fight for a corrupt-free world. \n\n\n\nNeed more information?UNDP and UNODC are at the forefront of these efforts. Contact us or reach out to the closest UNODC Field Office in your region. We look forward to hearing about your actions so please let us know any activities you have conducted by email at this address: unodc-ngounit@un.org or through Twitter at @UNODCCST. We also invite you to visit our Civil Society Anti-Corruption Website for additional resource material related to what civil society can do to fight corruption. Join people from all over the world who stand #UnitedAgainstCorruption and spread the word about your activities! Your Civil Society Team\,

SUMMARY:Political Party Funding: the Role of Business\, Legal Reforms and the Slow Pace of Change
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion: \n\n\n\nUndue influence by wealthy elites and looters on politicians is a danger to our society\, as politicians are more accountable to those who can fill their pockets as opposed to the people who put them in power. Long before the VBS Bank Scandals\, the Gupta enterprise\, Bosasa slush funds and the CR17 campaign scandals\, politicians and the business sector have colluded for selfish interests\, at the expense of the public interest. Despite the corruption scandals that continue to rock the nation\, we are yet to see regulated disclosure of political party funding. \n\n\n\nPlease join us as we host Business Leadership South Africa’s (BLSA) CEO\, BUSI MAVUSO\, who will speak on business being complicit in corruption and the role business should play in the fight against corruption AND political analyst\, author and lecturer\, RALPH MATHEGKA\, who will speak on how party funding corruption is a systemic problem that extends beyond the “nine wasted years” under President Jacob Zuma.  \n\n\n\n  Discussion hosted by My Vote Counts (MVC) and Right 2 Know (R2K) \n\n\n\nRSVP: by 4 November 2019

SUMMARY:How the public can help choose police leaders
DESCRIPTION:Prospective judges are rigorously vetted in a public nomination and selection process conducted by the Judicial Services Commission. Recently\, Parliament held transparent and public participatory processes in the appointment of the new public protector\, human rights commissioners and other heads of Chapter 9 institutions. \nBut in other appointments\, such as that of the national police commissioner\, the president has the prerogative to appoint individuals to this position with little or no transparency and without any public or parliamentary participation. The history of presidential appointments\, and the calibre of individuals selected to lead key criminal justice institutions\, raise the question of whether these appointment processes need to change.
