About the program

The Watcher’s Circle is an annual membership programme, launched in 2021 as part of Corruption Watch’s drive to build sustainable partnerships with the public in support of our anti-corruption initiatives in South Africa.

This programme fuels the work that we do and involves committed individuals who are willing to demonstrate their outrage by investing resources to fight corruption. We offer four levels of membership ranging from R5 000 to over R100 000 per year.

In naming the levels, we opted for different shades of red, varying in intensity, to identify each donation tier. Corruption Watch’s logo is a colour known as free speech red, and accordingly, we have created evocative descriptions for various tones of red, corresponding to each level of membership: the Rosebud Circle, the Torch Red Circle, the Scarlet Circle, and the Free Speech Red Circle – where Free Speech signifies the highest tier. Membership benefits vary according to levels and are revealed to members upon joining the programme. You can also check out our FAQs for more information.

Areas of Support

As an anti-corruption watchdog, Corruption Watch has developed multifaceted ways to turn the tide on corruption. We’ve received over 30 000 corruption complaints from the public since 2012. These complaints are the lifeblood of our organisation and represent a valuable resource into how corruption occurs in different sectors. We gather this intelligence to identify priority areas that form the basis of public awareness and advocacy campaigns. Because we are in it for the long haul, we make frequent contributions to creating an environment that deters corruption by helping to develop and strengthen effective laws governing whistle-blowing, and embarking on litigation cases that benefit the public.

The Watcher’s Circle supports three major areas of our work: our flagship campaigns (e.g. policing, whistle-blowers, health, mining); our analytical anti-corruption activities (e.g. research reports, analysis of corruption patterns and trends, inputs into policies and legislation, and our work promoting open data projects); and our outreach initiatives (e.g. community engagements, workshops or public education materials).
