More of your schools stories: Fees stolen for Thai trip

Here’s a snapshot of some of the reports* on schools we’ve received from the public recently so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we’re picking up: a principal in Mpumalanga using school fees to fund his romantic getaway to Thailand and an outraged school treasurer who speaks out about the thieving ways of her boss in Eldorado Park, Gauteng.

School fees pay for principal’s overseas holiday

“The Principal of *** school in *** (Mpumalanga) is abusing his power. Last year he used school money for his birthday and he used schools money to go on a trip for him and his wife to Thailand. He is seldom at school. He is always out doing business. Him and his deputy principal went to watch cricket in Johannesburg last term on a Friday during school time. He always shouts at us if we take a day off. He screams and shouts at us and treat us like children. Him and his men’s club use school money supposedly from the tea funds. They use this money to go and braai. the school management team went to Mozambique last year and they used almost R80 000 for that trip on the schools account. They claim they go on team-building sessions but some of the members that went told us that they just sit around and drink and have fun. A pre-primary secretary stole almost R80 000 from school fees money last year and she was just made to resign and the money was never recovered from her. This is the parents money. The parents pay hard for their childrens school fees. Money is loaned to staff members as loans. This money comes from the school fees. One lady loaned R10 000 from the school to buy a car. She left and never repaid the school.”

Brazen principal looting school account

“The Principal of *** School (Eldorado Park) is abusing her authority and misusing the funds the government is allocating to the school. She has a debit card to the school account and every time monies are paid into the account, she has some other creditor that needs to be paid. When asked, she always says that she is managing the finance of the school, but can never provide financial statements when SGB meetings are held. She has people who she pays on the payroll who are not even employed by the school SGB. She gives advances to teachers stating that the government still needs to sort out their salaries, however those monies are never returned to the school account. She pays money into the school account and immediately withdraws from that money and says she’s using it for petty cash. I am a treasurer at the school and any monies paid into the account, reflect on my phone, as well as withdrawing of funds.”
