Councillors urged to sign accountability pledge

The Right to Know (R2K) campaign has called on communities to urge local councillors to sign an accountability pledge for the upcoming municipal elections. This is according to a report on EWN.

R2K has partnered with several community organisations to get constituents in various parts of the country to hold their leaders accountable. The organisation wants all candidates in the local government elections to sign a pledge that the community may recall them if they don’t live up to their promises.

The group’s Noncedo Kheswa says the undertaking is an important part of upholding the country’s democratic principles.

“I am saying that the community must know that the person they have selected is the right person. Those who say they are ‘leaders’ must be the eyes and ears of the people.”
