SENIOR FINANCE OFFICER

Corruption Watch (CW) is a leading South African anti-corruption non-profit organisation with a 14-year track record of fighting corruption and promoting transparency. As an accredited chapter of Transparency International, CW plays a crucial role in South Africa’s anti-corruption ecosystem through evidence-based advocacy, strategic litigation, public engagement, and policy development.

At the core of CW’s mandate is the public reporting system, which empowers citizens to report corruption experiences. The organisation transforms these reports into actionable intelligence for research, policy interventions, limited investigations, strategic litigation, and public awareness campaigns that drive systemic change.    

Position overview

CW seeks to appoint a Senior Finance Officer to assist and support the Head of Finance and Administration in handling day-to-day operational finance tasks, while also providing analytical, compliance, and reporting support.

Key responsibilities

Support the Head of Finance and Administration in fulfilling CW’s financial responsibilities and requirements:   

  • Assist with the monthly payroll process.
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts.
  • Support the preparation of monthly management accounts.
  • Process all required journals.
  • Assist in preparing financial statements for the Board of Directors.
  • Provide support during the annual audit and liaise with external auditors.
  • Assist in preparing cash flow reports.
  • Maintain the asset register and ensure related insurance coverage is in place.
  • Assist with donor reporting and budgeting for donor proposals.
  • Maintain creditor accounts and issue invoices to the third parties.
  • Process all bank and petty cash transactions in Pastel and prepare complete bank reconciliations.
  • Support the Head of Finance with budget preparation as requested.
  • Respond to ad-hoc financial requests from the Head of Finance.

Ensure effective implementation of the Procurement Policy:

  • Maintain strong relationships with creditors.
  • Ensure and accept receipt of ordered supplies.
  • Verify and validate all outstanding accounts payable-related payments to accounts payable invoices.
  • Oversee the accurate processing of all supplier invoices.

Manage CW’s bank accounts:

  • Initiate vendor payments.
  • Ensure all payments are authorised and supported by complete documentation.
  • Review accounts daily to identify any unusual transactions.
  • Record all transactions in the cash book for each account.

Manage the CW office administration:

  • Oversee the office coordinator tasks.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of related events.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • At least five years’ experience in the same role.
  • Strong understanding of financial principles and accounting software, including Pastel. 
  • Experience and understanding of the NGO sector.
  • Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Proficient in understanding and interpreting financial statements.
  • Basic audit experience.

Skills and competencies  

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and spreadsheet reporting.
  • Organised and committed to accuracy and quality. 
  • Efficient time management with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
