REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: Research Study on Experiences of Combating Corruption in South Africa

DEADLINE: 15 March 2024

Corruption Watch is seeking proposals from qualified and experienced service providers to conduct a qualitative study on the experiences of individuals and organisations who are fighting corruption in South Africa. The research report should highlight the experiences of activists, media professionals, lawyers, whistle-blowers, government officials and law enforcement officers, who have faced threats to their lives and livelihoods in their efforts to expose, combat and prevent corruption. The aim of the study is to understand the risks posed to people actively involved in anti-corruption work in the current socio-political context.

Scope of Work

The selected service provider will be responsible for conducting the research within the country’s sociopolitical context. The scope of work includes but is not limited to:

  • A write-up of research design and conceptual analysis:
    • Develop a detailed research methodology, including surveys, interviews and focus groups.
    • Literature review focusing on South African anti-corruption legislative framework, human rights culture, the problematisation of ethics, morals and values as well as any other relevant psychological, philosophical and sociological theories.
  • Data analysis:
    • Analyse the information using appropriate qualitative analysis methods.
    • Identify patterns and trends within the data set.
  • Reporting:
    • Prepare a comprehensive report which summarises the literature, findings, and recommendations.
  • Work collaboratively with Corruption Watch team members who will be producing a podcast based on the research

Duration: four months, commencing from 1 April 2024.

Proposals

Interested applicants are requested to submit their proposals by 15 March 2024 adhering to the following requirements:

  • A sample of a research paper illustrating your skills and expertise in conducting research in social science disciplines (a sample of anti-corruption work in this regard will be advantageous).
  • A research plan that illustrates how the project will be executed.
  • A proposed budget, within the range of R130 000 – R150 000.
  • Profile(s) of individual(s) undertaking this work bearing in mind employment equity criteria.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: Mapping Corruption Risks for Climate Policy Improvement in South Africa

DEADLINE: 15 March 2024

Climate change poses a significant threat to South Africa’s environment, economy, and society. Effective climate policies and governance are essential to mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a sustainable future for the country. However, corruption in the implementation of climate policies can hinder progress and divert resources away from critical initiatives.

To this end, Corruption Watch is seeking proposals from qualified and experienced service providers to conduct research and analysis aimed at mapping opportunities and identifying corruption risks in South Africa’s climate policies and governance. The primary objective of this project is to enhance the effectiveness of climate policies and governance in the country. The research report generated through this project will serve as an advocacy plan, which will focus on promoting accountability, integrity, and transparency in climate-related initiatives.

Scope of Work

The selected service provider will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Conduct a thorough assessment of South Africa’s climate change policies and governance structures.
  • Identify key stakeholders and their roles in climate change administration and management.
  • Identify corruption risks and vulnerabilities within climate change policies and governance structures.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing anti-corruption mechanisms in preventing and combating corruption in respect to environmental governance and related activities.
  • Compile a comprehensive report that includes analysis, findings and recommendations.

Duration: three months, commencing from 1 April 2024.

  • A proposed budget, within the range of R130 000 – R150 000.
