Nzimande urges united anti-corruption fight

Sacp general secretary Blade Nzimande yesterday called on workers and labour leaders to fight corruption with Cosatu.

Nzimande was speaking at the national Workers’ Day rally in Botshabelo outside Bloemfontein. ANC president Jacob Zuma and tripartite alliance leaders also addressed the crowds.

Nzimande said: “Cosatu is seen by some as a business opportunity by those dealing with provident funds and insurance. They seek ways to buy labour leaders in order to gain access to those millions.

South Africa arrests 600 police officers for corruption

More than 600 South African Police Officers were arrested in South Africa’s Gauteng province since April 2011, the provincial police commissioner has said.

Lt Gen. Mzwandile Petross told newsmen in Pretoria on Wednesday that many of the arrests were attributed to tip-offs from members of the community.

Grave concern over corruption

A scathing report on government corruption has highlighted serious concerns about the perceived lack of commitment to fighting the scourge.

The Public Service Commission’s (PSC) report, "Investigation of Corruption and Systematic Corruption in the Public Service”, was delivered recently at an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) conference in Bloemfontein.

It revealed a dismal performance in investigating corruption within various departments.

Minister "moers" corruption

Sport and recreation Minister, Fikile Mbalula’s fight against corruption in sport and his commitment to advance sport codes through sound and clean governance, loyalty to all sports, a levelheaded approach to sport development amongst youths and quotas, graphically illustrates why politics has a moral obligation to intervene in sport.

Mbalula again nailed corruption in sport when he confirmed that the suspended CEO of Cricket South Africa (CSA), Gerald Majola and former Chief Operation Manager, Don McIntosh, must repay millions of rands they received in unauthorized bonuses.

The rise of a R500m empire

A property company co-owned by Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale and Parliament’s finance portfolio head, Thaba Mufamadi, has scored at least R520 million in government lease contracts.

Three of these contracts were awarded without being put out to public tender.

Although Mathale resigned as a director of Manaka Property Investments in March last year, he was a director throughout the period that Manaka brokered these state contracts and remains a shareholder.

Gauteng sick of graft, says police chief

From September 2010 to April this year, more than 600 officers were arrested for various crimes.

Gauteng residents are "sick and tired" of corruption, according to provincial police commissioner Mzwandile Petros, who also said yesterday the biggest driver of crime in Gauteng was graft and criminal police officers.

The candid nature of Lt-Gen Petros’s comments is in stark contrast to recent reports of increasing levels of corruption among Gauteng’s metro police officers.

Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, one of South Africa's top prosecutors, might soon be granted 24-hour police protection after being shot at while driving by unknown gunmen.

Breytenbach – who headed the fraud and corruption case against crime intelligence boss Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli and several other high-profile South Africans, and is regarded as a no-nonsense corruption buster – has in the past three weeks been the target of a shooting and an attempt to force her off the road while on her way home.
