The fifth and final episode of Corruption Watch’s new five-part podcast series on climate governance, titled In the Still of Night, brings together voices heard throughout the series and postulates, as a conclusion, three actions that must be taken now.
“This podcast series has taken us on a journey of learning and curiosity,” says narrator Melusi Ncala. “Through our engagement with ordinary people, were brought face to face with the daily realities of communities living with climate impacts.”
These encounters brought home to us how broken the system currently is, and how little it actually helps community members who experience the devastating ffects of climate change in their everyday lives. So how do we fix it?
“It comes down to three major shifts,” says Ncala. “The voices we’ve heard from national experts to grassroots activists, give us a clear picture of where solutions may lie. First, fix the laws. Second, strengthen civil society participation. Third, urge all of society to ensure that a no-secret policy is maintained and that this policy applies to everybody.”
In this episode we hear from Joanne Yawitch, head of the Project Management Unit at the Presidency; legal researcher Mashudu Masutha; Transparency International climate researcher Gvantsa Gverdtsiteli; Open Secrets investigator Michael Marchant; Bongani Johannes of Mining Affected Communities United in Action; Tim Lloyd, a senior associate at ALT Advisory and Power and Associates; climate science writer and journalist Leonie Joubert; Malik Dasoo, a climate researcher volunteering with Extinction Rebellion; Oxpeckers assistant editor Thabo Molelekwa; and Wade Parker of the Surplus People Project.
