Here’s a snapshot of some of the corruption reports* we’ve received from the public recently, so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we're picking up: cops being bribed by drug dealers, Free State Agriculture Department officials embezzling funds and tenders being slipped through the back door.
Cops bribed by drug dealers
“The police officers of *** are addicted to drugs. The drug dealers give them drugs as payment to keep them out of prison. The police come around at least once a day to collect money and/or drugs from these dealers. When or if a drug search is organised by the station commander, these police officials inform the dealers to get rid of the drugs with immediate effect.”

Cops target foreign drivers
“I was driving at the speed of 93km/h at the zone of 60km/h and the lady wanted to lock me up if I don’t pay the fine of R1500.00. So I had only R300.00 and my brother from RSA helped me. This lady usually does that speed checking at *** and you can’t miss her. She is always with Mr *** and Mr ***. These officials are there all time and I have reported their behaviour many times to *** instead they told me I can go further and I will not be successful. They only target us people from Botswana. Please help.”

Tender handed through the back door
“This company was late to submit their tenders, but they won both bids while their tender documents went through back door. Evidence will be cameras at tender board (***). Document later left offices via backdoor to be corrected as they used pen with a fluid that can be rubbed out. Get original papers you will see lots of rubbing … Same company won two tenders in different categories. Company involved is called *** trading.”

Roadblock bribe hotspot
“On most public holidays and weekends, we have a large contingent of policemen who man roadblocks on ***. This is a very busy main road and the policemen man the roadblock for about 1 hour and in that time the amount of cars that are stopped are huge and the drivers are always stopped. There is a very large immigrant community who operate businesses or live in the area and they are always stopped. The police roadblocks have gotten so bad on *** and *** and not because they are doing their jobs, but because they are always taking bribes. I was in a minibus taxi when someone was pulled over and the policeman took his entire takings for the day and there was nothing any of us could do. If a camera can be mounted near the section of the road (*** and ***, ***) where the roadblocks occur, the footage would be absolutely shocking.”

Free State Agri officials stealing money from projects
“The corruption in the Department of Agriculture-Free State will never end as long as culprits are left untouched. There is now a system in place whereby people called implementers have been engaged to oversee the operation of projects in farming. Some of these implementers know nothing about agriculture. They were engaged by officials who share money with them. It is reported that these implementers get 20% of every project they service. There is a woman whose place was supposed to have been furnished with all *** equipment, there is nothing, she has been made to sign papers indicating that she gave Dept of Agri permission to use funds for her project and that she received all equipment, while there is nothing at her project. This is how government money is being embezzled. For almost all projects, people signed for equipment they never received, government officials pocket the money, same thing happening at Land Affairs.”
