Here’s a snapshot of some of the corruption incidents* we’ve received from the public recently, so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we're picking up: nepotism and bribery the order of the day at education departments and political barons in a certain township taking advantage of elderly residents desperate for RDP housing.

Political entrepreneurs demanding bribes from elderly

“Okay let me get into the point, I am an individual who has been informed about financial swindling and corruption that has occurred and still continuing in a township called xxx. This township has a lot of old folks who are illiterate and that creates opportunities for political entrepreneurs to demand bribes from these poor masses that are desperate for RDP houses. They have also sold houses that do not belong to them. Our people here live in serfdom at the mercy of scoundrels! Furthermore, local Councillor, which is part of the  political barons, use his office to swindle petty constructors who are desperate to get tenders from the construction projects which are taking place here in xxx … I just hate what they are doing to this poor community and I think they should be shamed and arrested!”

‘So open to bribes it’s scary’

“Metro cops parked in XXX literally asking for bribes so they won't give you a ticket. I refused and now I have ticket. This is utter foolishness. The cops in this country are just so open to bribes in a scary thing.”

Jobs for family at marking centres

"Members of the department of education XXX district are recruiting their family members for the examination assistant position. Many of their nieces, nephews and children are working in the marking centres especially in the XXX one where even the principle of the school is getting his family members positions. This is unfair for those off us who apply honestly but are left dissappointed but of nepotisim in this municipality. These officials need to be caught out because they are taking away opportunities from others …”

‘We took the fine’

"Got stopped – realized drivers licence cards expired – officer persisted will get a huge fine if we don't give something ( money ) since she will do us a favour by not giving us a fine and we must do for her also a favour. By giving cash R600 otherwise we will get fine of R1250 … we partly video recorded the book she had in her hand ( fine book ) – she was getting anoyed and realised she was been recorded and changed her talking – we have her numberplate of kombi – and video clip – we took the fine ."

I’ve witnessed suspicious activities involving my colleagues

"Every year at our Education Service Centre (XXX), tenders are requested for Security and Cleaning for our office and our three districts : XXX, XXX and XXX. Services for Security and Cleaning can end up in the millions, so its a perfect opportunity for my colleagues to get involved personally. This is not the first time that colleagues have had a personal interest in these services. A friend who works in Tenders section has told me that staff involved are receiving incentives such as money (bribes). She was asked if she had "received anything" as she was in tenders, to which she replied "no". I have witnessed suspicious activities involving my colleagues. Staff from the Payments, Orders, Assets and Requisition sections have been asked to participate (since our office is under re-structuring), and they have been asked to assist with this tender process for all three districts and the ex-service centre … i see that my colleagues are taking full advantage of this."
