Here’s a snapshot of some of the corruption reports* we’ve received from the public recently, so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we’re picking up: cops in Vosloorus stealing valid licence discs and demanding payment for their return, a registrar at a nursing college appointing her family and friends to key positions and a Free State union exposes a colluding CEO and a certain henchman who are driving a state entity into the ground.

Abusive cops in Vosloorus

“In Vosloorus there are Local Taxi’s that operate in the township and these taxis are victim of constant harassment by the cops. They stopped my vehicle which was in good shape and took off the disc or road permit. They then advised the driver to pay R100.00 if he wants the Road disc back otherwise was going to drive the vehicle without the disc. This is a daily occurrence in Vosloorus and these officials even boast about it and they are well-known for doing this. Yes there are vehicles that should be taken off the road and individuals driving these vehicles without a Licence. However, they should follow the law and either impound the vehicle or arrest the driver. It’s know that some of these officials take these discs home and you have to go to their houses or meet them at a certain point pay them and to get your disc back.”

Nepotism at nursing college

“The crime or corruption I want to report is nepotism in our institution *** Nursing College. The new registrar *** started working in the middle of 2012 but she’s already hired four of her relatives who have no formal qualifications, while qualified people are turned down. In August 2012 she brought her niece *** to work as a library assistant & in January 2013 she brought her your sister *** who has not even a matric to be a Maintenance Assistance Officer before moving her to the position of registry at the beginning of this month. Furthermore she brought her younger sister’s best friend *** to work in HR Department & moved *** from library to work with *** in HR. In March Mrs *** brought her brother *** to work as a transport assistant furthermore he is not qualified as well.”

Union speaks out

“As employees of *** (Free State) and the Union in this organisation we are concerned about corrupt activities that have been going on during the stewardship of the former Chief Executive *** and right-hand-man ***, the Corporate Services Director. While we applaud the Board for not renewing the employment contract of the former CEO, we are equally concerned that the real mastermind behind all the corruption is left to continue unattended, and more than anything he (Mr ***) has been given carte blanche powers to run the institution single-handedly, creating fertile ground for corruption to thrive and continue unabated. There is misuse of company credit card by the ceo, misappropriation of funds or taxpayers money, bogus consultants and flouting of procurement procedures, questionable independence of external auditors: enrichment of legal advisors; collusion between Mr *** and the former chief executive on an authorized sale of company assets. Non-payment of rent by the former chief executive: preferential treatment given to the PA of the former chief executive.”
