Here’s a snapshot of some of the corruption incidents* we’ve received from the public recently, so you can get a feel for the kind of trends we're picking up: a jobs-for-friends scheme by a senior HR manager, bribes in exchange for test passes at a certain Gauteng traffic department, a Harley Davidson biker targeted for tjo-tjo and corruption with a subcontractor at a well-known power plant.

Scheme to create jobs for pals

“I want to remain unknown for safety. There is Massive Corruption and Nepotism for posts in the Operations Department of ***. Post are created to accomodate cronies by the General Manager(***) and the Senior Manager HR(***).They have appointed the two Managers with education requirement lower than that of their vacant subordinates (Regional Managers).*** studied a diploma which is 100% irrelevant to the position he has been offered.Word is that he was involved in writing the advert to accomodate him with lower qualifications.Any professional HR Specialist, can confirm that *** is handled by an unqualified person. How the MD approved the appointments,is a shock to most staff members.”

‘Pay me R1 200 and I’ll pass you’

“It was around 9:00am when I arrived at the *** Station. I went to Reception to ask the time when I was supposed to go in such that I could  be tested on my theory for driving. I was asked to sit inside and wait for 9:45am. I decided to go and wait outside since it was cold inside. Few minutes later I was called by the same official- the receptionist- who had told me about the time. He said, You know the test is very difficult. You will not pass. I asked why? He said, it is done online now, so if you want and you have the money I will arrange for you. He said, give me the R1200.00 and the receipt [that you received to come for the test]. Instead of going at 10:00am you will go at 11:00am and then the lady  inside  will help you. I was puzzled and shocked to hear this. I said I would love to pass but I have no money . I had no intention of giving a bribe. We parted. After the test I failed and the lady did not agree to give me a printout. Maybe I didn't answer correctly or since I was told I will not make it unless I accept to be helped at the cost of R1200.00. I met another lady I knew from my previous attempt to do this particular test. She asked me whether I had passed. I told her that I didn't. She continued talking and said , I am going to register again and I am going to buy it. Then she related her story which was similar to mine. I decided I would not go to *** anymore but rather  go to ***.”

Cop takes of name badge, demands ‘bonus’

"A massive roadblock was conducted by JMPD on Main Road in ***. I was singled out because I ride a Harley Davidson and told I can afford to pay a "cash bonus" or otherwise my Tuesday would become very difficult. I have a Harley Logo on my license plate and this was given as the reason why I would have my bike impounded and would have to walk to work if I don't pay. The officer had removed all identification from his reflective jacket and would not give his name.”
