No more ignoring the AG’s recommendations

The recently enacted Public Audit Amendment Act and its Material Irregularity Regulations – which give the Auditor-General extended powers – will only be able to strengthen the accountability and transparency chain to an extent, writes Christine Botha of the Centre for Constitutional Rights. For the Auditor-General’s recommendations to be effectively implemented and enforced, our under-performing prosecuting authority and investigative bodies must also come to the party.

Latest CW report highlights erosion of democracy

Corruption Watch’s 2018 corruption report, released today, reflects the impact of corruption on the lives of ordinary people, who suffer the most as it strips them of human dignity and access to basic human rights. Titled Upholding Democracy, the report also signals the role of civil society and members of the public alike in exposing corruption and holding leaders to account during 2018.

Applications for special votes now open

The Independent Electoral Commission has opened its two-week window for applications for special votes in the 2019 national and provincial elections. Applications for special votes may be submitted between 4 and 18 April, and this only applies to votes cast in South Africa. Find out how to go about it.

CW and CASAC call for review of candidate lists

Corruption Watch and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution have called for political parties to remove all ethically challenged individuals – not only those who have been convicted in a court – from candidature for elected political office. The organisations have also demanded that the relevant legislation be amended so as to raise the bar on acceptable candidature for political office.
