School governing body (SGB) elections are currently under way, and will be until the end of March. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to take note of the date on which the voting will take place at their child’s school.

The theme for this year’s elections is Be active, Be Principled. Vote wisely. Njalo!.  Participation means that you either nominate and vote for a candidate who you think would make your child’s future a top priority, or you offer to stand in the elections yourself, so that you can play an active role in influencing the way the school is run.

Only parents or guardians who are on the school’s admission register / voter’s roll will be allowed to take part, so ensure that the school has your details. The image below explains who is eligible to stand for election, and what voters must do. You can also download or read Corruption Watch’s SGB handbook.

If your school has already held elections, you are within your rights as a parent to insist on transparency and accountability from the principal, admin staff and SGB at your child’s school.

If your school is still to hold elections, this is your chance to make a change!
